Cowlitz Co., WA (December 17, 2024) – Three people were sent to the hospital after being involved in a traffic accident with a speeding driver in Cowlitz County. Reports from authorities show the wreck occurred on Interstate 5 early Monday morning, December 16. Responders were sent to the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m. at milepost 24 north of Woodland. A vehicle operated by a 24-year-old male struck another car, pushing it into the guardrail. Police reports show the driver of the first vehicle was traveling at unsafe speeds at the time of the collision. Three individuals were sent to the hospital with injuries. Police asked local drivers to avoid the roadway while responders worked in the area, resulting in substantial delays in traffic.
We hope for the full recovery of the injured victims.
Car accidents are, unfortunately, a frequent occurrence in the United States and across the state of Washington. On average, more than 17,000 car crashes happen annually in the U.S., injuring approximately 7,500 individuals each day and resulting in the tragic loss of over 100 lives. In Washington, the frequency of car accidents is equally concerning. Each year, the state witnesses hundreds of thousands of accidents that result in tens of thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities. In 2023 alone, over 600 people lost their lives in traffic collisions in the Evergreen State.
The primary cause of most car wrecks in Washington is negligent driving, with speeding being the leading contributor to a significant portion of these accidents. In addition to speeding, distracted driving, such as texting, using mobile devices, or engaging with other in-vehicle distractions, also plays a substantial role in traffic collisions. Driving under the influence—whether from alcohol or drugs—is another common form of driver negligence that leads to dangerous accidents.
