Motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading public safety concerns across Washington State and the nation. In 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported over 40,000 traffic-related deaths nationwide, many of which were preventable. Key contributors to these tragedies include impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and failure to wear seatbelts. Alarmingly, impaired drivers account for nearly one-third of all fatal crashes across the country.
Washington has not been immune to this trend. In 2023, serious traffic accidents and fatalities increased, particularly on major highways such as I-5, State Route 520, and Highway 99. With human error responsible for more than 94% of all collisions, the dangers faced by drivers, passengers, and pedestrians remain significant.
