Every year, thousands of lives are upended by motor vehicle accidents across Washington State. In 2023 alone, more than 800 people were killed on Washington’s roads. Nationwide, traffic collisions claimed the lives of over 40,000 individuals. Among the most vulnerable on the road are motorcyclists, who face a significantly higher risk of injury or death in a crash due to the lack of protection offered by a vehicle.
In recent years, motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise. Across the United States, over 6,000 motorcyclists were killed in traffic accidents in a single year. In Washington, motorcycle riders represent a disproportionately high percentage of traffic deaths compared to the total number of registered motorcycles. Despite accounting for just 3% of vehicles on the road, motorcyclists make up nearly 15% of all traffic fatalities in the state.
Whether it’s a motorcycle or car crash, driver negligence continues to be the leading factor in most collisions. Speeding, intoxication, distracted driving, and fatigue are common causes. Alarmingly, speed-related crashes alone took over 11,000 lives in one recent year. When someone chooses to drive recklessly, they’re endangering not just themselves but everyone around them.
