Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death across the United States. In 2022 alone, more than 40,000 lives were lost due to traffic collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Many of these tragic incidents are linked to dangerous driving behaviors such as distracted driving, intoxication, speeding, and failure to wear seatbelts. Alarmingly, nearly 30% of fatal crashes each year are attributed to impaired driving.
In Washington state, the statistics are equally concerning. In 2023, over 800 lives were claimed in traffic accidents—a 10% rise from the previous year. The vast majority of these crashes stemmed from negligent driving, which the NHTSA reports is responsible for more than 94% of accidents nationwide. Drunk driving alone contributes to around 13,000 deaths per year, averaging one fatality every 39 minutes.
