Tacoma, WA (July 4, 2025) — Early Wednesday morning, July 2, a serious crash in Tacoma left nearly 2,000 residents without power and one pedestrian hospitalized after a vehicle struck a utility pole.
Tacoma Police say the incident occurred shortly before 5:00 a.m. near South 76th Street and Pacific Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion, which was later confirmed to be a transformer that blew after the crash.
Investigators say the driver first struck a pedestrian before crashing into a power pole, triggering the outage. The pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital, though their condition has not yet been released.
The driver was taken into custody at the scene and is suspected of driving under the influence.
Pacific Avenue remained closed for several hours as crews worked to repair the damage and police continued their investigation. Power was fully restored after a few hours, but not before nearly 2,000 customers were impacted.
The crash remains under investigation by Tacoma Police.
We hope the injured individuals make a timely recovery.
Every year, thousands of pedestrians across the U.S. are seriously injured or killed in traffic collisions, and Washington State is no exception. In cities like Tacoma, where busy intersections, fast-moving traffic, and distracted drivers are all too common, simply crossing the street can lead to life-altering consequences.
Whether it’s a poorly lit crosswalk, a driver failing to yield, or someone speeding through a red light, pedestrian crashes often happen in a split second, and nearly always leave the pedestrian worse off. In fact, the vast majority of pedestrian injuries result from driver negligence. Speeding, texting behind the wheel, driving under the influence, and fatigue continue to put lives at risk across Pierce County and beyond.
If you or a loved one has been hit by a vehicle while walking in Tacoma, you may be facing mounting medical bills, missed time at work, and painful physical and emotional recovery.
