Lakewood, WA (April 5, 2025) - A traffic accident occurred in Lakewood on Friday evening, March 4, that left one man with injuries. Reports from the Washington State Patrol show the wreck occurred on Interstate 5 near milepost 124 at approximately 3:00 p.m.
Two vehicles were traveling north on the interstate when one vehicle struck a barrier and was redirected into the roadway. It then collided with the second vehicle before fleeing the scene. The second vehicle came to rest on the left shoulder of the roadway, partially blocking the HOV lane. A 29-year-old man suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to Tacoma General Hospital by ambulance. The incident blocked the interstate for approximately 90 minutes, causing significant traffic delays. Police in Lakewood continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident.
We hope for the full and swift recovery of the injured victim.
Auto accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 40,000 lives were lost in motor vehicle crashes in 2022 alone. Many of these incidents are fueled by high-risk behaviors such as impaired driving, distracted driving, excessive speed, and failure to wear seatbelts. Alarmingly, impaired driving accounts for nearly 30% of annual traffic fatalities.
In 2023, Washington State experienced a sharp rise in fatal crashes, with over 800 lives lost—a 10% increase from the previous year. Negligent driving is at the heart of this growing crisis, contributing to over 94% of all collisions reported across the country. Drunk driving, in particular, continues to be devastating: in a single year, nearly 13,000 Americans died due to alcohol-impaired drivers—averaging one death every 39 minutes.
