Tacoma, WA (May 15, 2025) - A rollover collision on eastbound State Route 512 near the South Meridian Street exit in Tacoma led to significant traffic disruptions on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m., resulting in the complete blockage of eastbound lanes
First responders worked at the scene to help involved parties and transport those in need of medical treatment to local hospitals. The accident caused substantial delays, with all eastbound traffic being diverted to Meridian Street. Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes and expect extended travel times as crews worked to clear the scene.
Emergency responders and the Washington State Department of Transportation worked to manage the situation. Police continue to investigate.
Our thoughts are with those involved. We hope for their full recovery.
Over the last ten years, traffic collisions have become an increasingly urgent issue across the country, and Tacoma is no exception. Each year, millions of motor vehicle accidents are reported nationwide, and tragically, more than 40,000 people lose their lives as a result. In Washington state, and especially in fast-growing urban areas like Tacoma, serious wrecks are becoming alarmingly common.
While poor road conditions, mechanical issues, or severe weather can sometimes contribute to crashes, the overwhelming majority are caused by human error. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 90% of all traffic accidents involve driver negligence. More than 70% of fatal crashes stem from reckless or careless behavior behind the wheel.
Distracted driving is now the number one cause of traffic accidents across the U.S.—and it’s a growing concern in Pierce County. Every year, over 400,000 collisions are attributed to distracted drivers, and nearly 3,000 people lose their lives as a result. Driving under the influence, speeding, and falling asleep at the wheel are also major contributors to catastrophic crashes.
