Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Every day, bicyclists across Washington State face serious risks while sharing the road with motor vehicles. Whether it’s a high-traffic intersection in Seattle, a suburban street in Tacoma, or a bike lane along Spokane’s main corridors, collisions between drivers and cyclists can have devastating, life-altering consequences.
In recent years, Washington has seen a troubling rise in bicycle-related crashes. While biking remains a healthy and eco-friendly way to travel, it also exposes cyclists to unique dangers, especially when drivers fail to pay attention, yield properly, or respect cyclists' right to the road. According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, hundreds of cyclists are injured each year across the state, many suffering severe and long-term injuries.
The causes of these accidents are often the same dangerous behaviors that plague general traffic safety:
Unlike drivers, bicyclists have little to protect them in a crash. Even at low speeds, collisions can result in broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, or internal bleeding. The recovery can be long and painful, and the financial strain from medical bills and time off work can be overwhelming.
