Des Moines, WA (May 25, 2025) - On May 23, authorities shut down a section of Des Moines Memorial Drive South following a fatal motorcycle collision involving a bus.
According to King County Metro, the motorcyclist and the bus were involved in a head-on collision. The motorcyclist lost their life due to the crash. It still hasn't been confirmed if there were any passengers aboard the bus when the accident occurred.
The affected stretch of roadway, between Marine View Drive and South 212th Street, remained closed as investigators worked to determine the exact cause of the incident. Police in Des Moines continue to investigate the details of the crash.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Motorcycle fatalities remain a serious concern in Des Moines and across Washington State. Each year, hundreds of thousands of traffic accidents are reported throughout the Evergreen State, with a small yet alarming percentage involving motorcyclists. In 2023 alone, more than 890 motorcycle crashes occurred statewide, with around 330 individuals suffering injuries. Despite motorcycles accounting for a small fraction of vehicles on the road, they represented approximately 15% of all traffic-related fatalities nationwide, underscoring how dangerous these crashes can be.
In Des Moines, motorcycle accidents often occur on high-speed roads and intersections where visibility and reaction time are limited. Many of these tragic incidents are linked to driver negligence. Statewide data shows that more than half of motorcycle crashes involve motorists who failed to yield the right of way. Common factors in fatal motorcycle collisions include speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving, and unsafe lane changes.
Urban areas like Seattle and Tacoma see high accident volumes due to congestion, but communities like Des Moines face their own risks—particularly on local highways and rural stretches where speeding is more common and collisions often result in severe or fatal outcomes.
