Kent, WA (April 23, 2025) – Police in Kent are currently investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on Monday night, April 21. Both directions of Central Avenue South were closed at approximately 9:00 p.m. while responders worked in the area. Reports show a 45-year-old man was crossing the road from the middle turning lane when he was struck by a vehicle that was unable to stop in time. The victim was ejected from the road and thrown into a fence due to the impact. The Kent Police Traffic Unit continues to investigate the details of the accident.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Pedestrian-related accidents in Washington State have become a growing concern in recent years. Fatalities have risen significantly—from 103 in 2018 to 136 in 2022—marking a 32% increase. While the number of serious injuries has remained relatively steady, with 408 reported in 2022 compared to 400 in 2018, the upward trend in deaths is alarming and calls attention to the vulnerability of pedestrians on our roads.
Nationwide, the situation is just as troubling. More than 7,500 pedestrians are killed annually in traffic collisions across the U.S. Pedestrians are among the most unprotected individuals on the road, lacking the barriers of a vehicle to shield them from the devastating force of a crash. A single moment of driver inattention or recklessness can result in lifelong consequences or unimaginable loss.
