Pateros, WA (June 25, 2025) – A deadly crash on Wednesday morning shut down both directions of Highway 153 near milepost 1, just west of Pateros.
According to the Washington State Patrol, three vehicles were involved in the collision, which left all lanes blocked. One driver, 59-year-old Apolinar Martingracia, died at the scene. Another driver was taken to the hospital with injuries, while the third was not hurt.
The Washington State Department of Transportation responded to assist with traffic control as emergency crews cleared the scene and began their investigation.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Car crashes remain a leading cause of death in Washington State, leaving hundreds of families each year grappling with unimaginable grief. From the busy corridors of I-5 and I-90 to quiet rural roads and city streets, fatal collisions are an all-too-frequent tragedy across the state.
In 2023, Washington experienced a troubling increase in deadly roadway accidents. Most of these devastating incidents could have been prevented. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 90% of fatal traffic accidents in the U.S. stem from human mistakes, and Washington is no exception. Some of the most common contributing factors include:
Distracted driving, such as texting or using a phone behind the wheel
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Drowsy driving, particularly on long trips or during late hours
Excessive speed and aggressive maneuvers that leave little room for error
These dangerous behaviors put everyone at risk and can result in irreversible consequences. A single moment of carelessness on a rainy Seattle freeway or a remote stretch of road near Yakima can shatter lives in an instant.
